RISK FACTORS:

Below are the risk factors associated with prostate cancer:

  • Family History - having a brother, father, grandfather or cousin with prostate cancer
  • Age - 90% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men 50 and older
  • African Americans are at greater risk
  • Obesity and/or a diet high in saturated fats, sugar and red meat may increase risk

SYMPTOMS:

Early state prostate cancer often has no warning signs. Once noticeable symptoms appear, the disease may have spread beyond its original tumor site. Here are common symptoms of prostate cancer:

  • Dull pain in lower pelvic area
  • Urgency of urination
  • Difficulty starting urination and/or pain while urinating
  • Weak urine flow and dribbling
  • Frequent sensation that you bladder is full
  • Frequent nighttime urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Painful ejaculation
  • General pain in your lower back, hips or upper thighs
  • Loss of appetite and weight
  • Persistent bone pain

SCREENING & DIAGNOSIS:

It is recommended that annual screening for prostate cancer begin at age 50, African American men and anyone with a family history should be tested every year beginning at age 40.

During the Digital Rectal Exam or DRE, a physician inserts a gloved finger in the rectum to feel the size, shape and texture of the prostate. A prostate biopsy may then be recommended. In this test, using a local anesthetic and ultrasound guidance, the urologist will insert a tiny needed into the prostate and withdraw small amounts of tissue to be examined in a laboratory.

The Prostate Specific Antigen blood test or PSA determines the level of protein secreted by the prostate into the bloodstream. For men with an elevated PSA level or abnormal prostate exam, additional urologic evaluation is needed. The PSA level could be elevated due to other conditions, such as benign prostate enlargement or urinary tract infection.
