PEYRONIE's DISEASE
PEYRONIE's DISEASE is a condition characterized by the formation of hard plaques, or lumps, that form underneath the skin of the penis. These plaques can lead to curvature of the penis and painful erections, and commonly develop on the upper portion of the penis. The plaques reduce the elasticity of the connective tissue within the penis and cause the penis to bend.
Some physicians believe that Peyronie’s is likely the result of minor penile trauma. The injury triggers an inflammatory response causing the formation of excessive scar tissue. This scar tissue is what causes plaque formation.
In mild cases, conservative treatment may be recommended for about 12 months after symptoms present. There are multiple oral medications shown to provide some benefits. Another option is a drug injected directly into the plaque. Surgery is usually reserved for patients with severe disabling deformities of the penis.
